Zopiclone (brand names include Imovane, Zimovane, and many others) is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic agent used to treat insomnia. Zopiclone is sedating and marketed as a sleeping pill. Short term use is recommended as long term or daily use has been reported to cause dependence in some users. Zopiclone has also been shown to have the potential for abuse and addition. Zopiclone is not commercially available in the United States but in medical use in many countries. The most frequently reported adverse effects are bitter or metallic taste, dry mouth, nausea, and dizziness. Zopiclone toxicology testing can be performed on body fluids, blood, urine and hair. Zopiclone can be difficult to detect however, because it clears quickly from the body and may be in low dosages. Hair testing may extend the window of detection and additionally may distinguish long term use from a single exposure.
