Fatty acids with 22 or more carbon atoms are called very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) and are present in small amounts in most tissues. Unlike most fatty acids, VLCFAs are too long to be metabolized in the mitochondria. Very long chain fatty acids and the ratios of C24/C22 and C26/C22 are increased in conditions affecting peroxisomal fatty acid metabolism such as X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD), Zellweger Syndrome, and to some extent in rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP).
