LP14504-2   Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis
Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is an obligate pathogenic bacterium in the genus Mycobacterium. It is often abbreviated M. paratuberculosis or M. avium ssp. paratuberculosis. It is the causative agent of Johne's disease, which affects ruminants such as cattle, and also perhaps the human disease Crohn's disease.

Recent studies have shown that MAP present in milk can survive pasteurization, which has raised human health concerns due to the widespread nature of MAP in modern dairy herds. MAP survival during pasteurization is dependent on the D72C-value of the strains present and their concentration in milk. It is heat resistant and is capable of sequestering itself inside white blood cells, which may contribute to its persistence in milk. It has also been reported to survive chlorination in municipal water supplies. Copyright Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License. LP39067-1   Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis Ab
Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is a bacterium which causes Johne's disease, a chronic enteric infection in ruminants and certain other animals. It occurs in 40% of dairy herds worldwide and in 68% of those in the United States, thus having a significant economic impact on the dairy industry. The incubation period for MAP is two to five years, during which time infected calves shed the bacteria in their feces, milk and colostrum. There is no proven treatment and removal of animals from the herd seems the most effective alternative. PMID: 24089453 PMID: 19602288 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
