Description

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is a bacterium which causes Johne's disease, a chronic enteric infection in ruminants and certain other animals. It occurs in 40% of dairy herds worldwide and in 68% of those in the United States, thus having a significant economic impact on the dairy industry. The incubation period for MAP is two to five years, during which time infected calves shed the bacteria in their feces, milk and colostrum. There is no proven treatment and removal of animals from the herd seems the most effective alternative. PMID: 24089453 PMID: 19602288 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
