In cardiovascular physiology, ejection fraction (Ef) is the fraction of blood pumped out of a ventricle with each heart beat. The term ejection fraction applies to both the right and left ventricles; one can speak equally of the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and the right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF). Two-dimensional (2D) imaging is one of three ultrasound modes (2D, M-mode, and Doppler) used for cardiac imaging. 2D imaging is the primary method of cardiac imaging and allows structures to be viewed moving in real time in a cross-section of the heart (two dimensions). It is used to detect abnormal anatomy or motion. The most common cross-sectional views are the parasternal long axis, the parasternal short axis, and the apical view.
