Part Descriptions
LP15426-7 Aspartate aminotransferase
Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme that is released by injured muscle cells and liver cell and is predominately found in the liver and heart. AST levels in the blood are most often used to monitor liver damage. AST is typically tested in conjunction with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) when a liver panel is ordered. High levels of AST in the bloodstream could indicate hepatitis, drug damage to the liver, cirrhosis, alcoholism, or other liver disorders. [Lab Tests Online:ast/tab/test]

LP31977-9 Alanine aminotransferase
Alanine transaminase or ALT is an enzyme (EC 2.6.1.2) that catalyzes the reversible transfer of an amino group from alanine to a-ketoglutarate. It is found in serum and in various bodily tissues but is most commonly associated with the liver. It is also called serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) or alanine aminotransferase (ALAT). Diagnostically, it is almost always measured in unitslitre (UL). Elevated levels:Elevated levels of ALT often suggest the existence of other medical problems such as alcoholic or viral hepatitis, congestive heart failure, liver damage, biliary duct problems, infectious mononucleosis, or myopathy. For this reason, ALT is commonly used as a way of screening for liver problems. However, elevated levels of ALT do not automatically mean that medical problems exist. Fluctuation of ALT levels is normal over the course of the day, and ALT levels can also increase in response to strenuous physical exercise.
