Infectious bronchitis (IB) is an important poultry disease worldwide. It is caused by infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and affects galliform and nongalliform birds. The impact on the economy is decreased egg production and poor egg quality as well as stunted growth, poor carcass weight and mortality in some chickens.
IBV not only infects the respiratory tract but can also affect the renal and reproductive systems. Diagnostic methods for IBV have greatly improved over time, less sensitive and time consuming serology tests and viral cultures have been replaced by methods such as reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), and sequencing.
