Folate is involved in normal red cell maturation and used for the evaluation of macrocytic/megaloblastic anemia. Folate red blood cell (RBC) measurements are used in identification of dietary folate deficiency that might be otherwise difficult to ascertain since serum folate concentration may rapidly rise to normal level after just one balanced meal whereas RBC folate increases more slowly. RBC folate is usually not decreased as a consequence of iron deficiency and the evaluations of individuals with low serum folate and iron levels. Source: Regenstrief Institute
