- There is no such thing as a gradient strip for "penicillin" alone. Mapped to the gradient strip codes for "Penicillin G" and "Penicillin V".

Part Descriptions
LP14319-5 Penicillin
Penicillin (sometimes abbreviated PCN) refers to a group of Beta-lactam antibiotics used in the treatment of bacterial infections caused by susceptible, usually Gram-positive, organisms. The name "O.E. penicillin" can also refer to a specific member of the penicillin group. All penicillins possess the basic Penam Skeleton, formula R-C9 H11 N2 O4 S, where R is a variable side chain.

LP6300-0 Gradient strip
A gradient strip is a reagent strip that contains a predefined concentration gradient of a specific antibiotic or combination of antibiotics that is used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and antimicrobial resistance detection (ARD).
For AST, the result is reported in terms of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of a specific antimicrobial that prevents the visible growth of bacteria. In LOINC, the "Gradient strip" method is used for AST gradient strips that result in an MIC result.
For ARD, the result is reported as the presence or absence of a specific enzyme or other mechanism that confers resistance, which is determined based on comparing the inhibitory concentration (IC) of a specific antimicrobial with the IC of that antimicrobial plus a resistance inhibitor. In LOINC, the "Gradient strip ARD" method is used for ARD gradient strips, which are not intended for determining individual MIC values.

- Change Reason
- Feb 2016-removed "E-test" from the short and long names because the "ETEST" name is trademarked; Changed COMMON_TEST_RANK and COMMON_SI_TEST_RANK from 1641 to 0 since this term is deprecated and mapped to LOINC 7041-7 and 7042-5.
