Part Descriptions
LP16775-6 Trichinella spiralis
A parasite of carnivorous mammals that causes TRICHINOSIS. It is especially common in rats and in swine fed uncooked garbage. Human infection is initiated by the consumption of raw or insufficiently cooked pork or other meat containing the encysted larvae.

LP40045-4 Trichinella spiralis Ab
Trichinella spiralis is a worm in the Trichinella genus and causes trichinosis in carnivorous mammals, including humans. PMCID: PMC4465845 The T. spiralis female is viviparous and larger than the male. The infective larvae are approximately 1 mm long. Trichinosis is acquired by eating raw or undercooked meat that is infected with the larvae of T. spiralis. Disease severity varies based upon the number of ingested larvae. All three stages of the T. spiralis life cycle take place in one host. Larvae encyst in striated muscles then excyst in the gut of mammals that consume infected meat. The worms mature and then reproduce in the small intestine. Newborn larvae migrate to striated muscles where they encyst. Initial symptoms begin with diarrhea or abdominal pain. Systemic symptoms occur in the later stage of disease and include myalgias, edema, fever and eosinophilia as larvae migrate and encyst. Beef products and horse meat may be contaminated by equipment also used to process pork. Trichinosis can be prevented by thoroughly cooking pork or wild game, which is a minor cause of trichinosis. There is no proven effective treatment for trichinosis.[NCBI Books: NBK8176]
