Hemoglobin.gastrointestinal.lower [Presence] in Stool by Immunoassay
Active
Term Description
A fecal immunochemical test (FIT) (also called an immunochemical fecal occult blood test or iFOBT) uses antibodies specific to the human globulin part of the Hemoglobin (rather than the heme part that Guiac tests target). Thus they do not react to animal, hemoglobin or myglobin) as found in meat , nor plant analogues, and drugs like Vitamin C do not effect the testing, so dietary adjustment is not needed. More important, globulin does not survive the enzymes of the upper digestive tract, so it is specific to lower GI bleeding-that is important to colon cancer screening. Different kit manufacturers have different requirements for repeats and timing, but most experts say you need samples from 2 different days for good results.

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016. Changed Component to Hemoglobin.gastrointestinal.lower to make the term more descriptive and easier to find. The method was changed to IA for consistency across Classes.
