Part Descriptions

LP14045-6   Testosterone
Testosterone is an androgenic steroid and is the primary male sex hormone. Approximately half of circulating testosterone is tightly bound to a protein called sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and is biologically inactive. Another fraction is weakly bound to other proteins, such as albumin, and the remainder is unbound, or "free". Weakly bound and free testosterone together represent bioavailable testosterone. Both total and free testosterone levels decrease with age. Low testosterone is associated with many other conditions, including osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, obesity, diabetes and ischemic heart disease. LP14045-6   Testosterone
A potent androgenic steroid and major product secreted by the Leydig cells of the testis. Its production is stimulated by luteinizing hormone from the pituitary gland. In turn, testosterone exerts feedback control of the pituitary LH and FSH secretion. Depending on the tissues, testosterone can be further converted to dihydrotestosterone or estradiol. LP7565-7   Saliva
Saliva is produced primarily by the parotid, submaxillary, and sublingual glands. It is secreted at the rate of 0-3 milliliters per minute which is affected by various factors including anxiety, hydration and hunger. Oral fluid is broadly used to test for drugs of abuse in employment and forensic settings, and is especially useful since it is difficult to adulterate, is quick and is non-invasive. Oral fluid is used to test a variety of analytes, including to test alcohol, HIV and other antibodies, therapeutic drugs and steroids, but its primary use is to test for drugs of abuse including amphetamines, cocaine and metabolites, opioids, methadone, cannabis and heroin.
