Reverse T3 and T3 are deiodinated metabolites of thyroxine (T4), the major secretory product of the thyroid gland. The conversion of T4 to T3 and T3 reverse is inhibited in a wide variety of conditions including fasting, malnutrition, poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, trauma, surgery, and systemic illnesses. Increased reverse T3 coupled with low T3 indicates sick euthyroid syndrome, not true hypothyroidism. Information from Quest Laboratories 2006 10 24. Source: Regenstrief Institute
