Part Descriptions

LP18033-8   Amino acids
Organic compounds that generally contain an amino (-NH2) and a carboxyl (-COOH) group. Twenty alpha-amino acids are the subunits which are polymerized to form proteins. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006

LP18033-8   Amino acids
Most aminoacidopathies are autosomal recessive or X-linked inherited disorders due to deficient enzyme or transport proteins. More than 30 aminoacidopathies have been identified in literature. Severe liver disease or renal tubular disorders may also cause elevated amino acid levels. Selected aminoacidopathies may be difficult to detect among newborns due to the lack of protein-containing diet. (Information from Quest Diagnostics 9/14/06). Source: Regenstrief Institute

LP18033-8   Amino acids
In chemistry, an amino acid is a molecule containing both amine and carboxyl functional groups. These molecules are particularly important in biochemistry, where this term refers to alpha-amino acids with the general formula H2NCHRCOOH, where R is an organic substituent. In the alpha amino acids, the amino and carboxylate groups are attached to the same carbon atom, which is called the α-carbon. The various alpha amino acids differ in which side chain (R group) is attached to their alpha carbon. They can vary in size from just a hydrogen atom in glycine through a methyl group in alanine to a large heterocyclic group in tryptophan.
