Clostridium tetani IgG Ab [Presence] in Serum
Discouraged
Status Information
- Status
- DISCOURAGED
- Comment
- Human infection with Clostridium tetani produces little, if any, immunity, and therefore serologic testing for the C. tetani organism itself (which this term represents) is not useful. However, vaccination with tetanus toxoid produces active immunity, and post-vaccine serologic testing for tetanus toxoid antibodies is performed. The LOINC codes that represent tetanus toxoid antibodies include the word "toxoid" in the Component, e.g., "Clostridium tetani toxoid Ab".
Part Description
LP16678-2 Clostridium tetani
Clostridium tetani is a bacterium of the genus Clostridium. Like other Clostridium species, it is Gram-positive, resembling tennis rackets or drumsticks. In 1884, the strychnine-like toxin of tetanus was isolated from free-living, anaerobic soil bacteria and shortly thereafter, in 1890, a vaccine was developed using tetanus toxoid.

- Change Reason
- Changed answer list from "Normative" to "Example" to fit the current LOINC model.; The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
