41169-4Valine [Presence] in BloodActive

Part Descriptions

LP15946-4   Valine
Valine, one of the 20 proteinogenic amino acids, is nutritionally essential. It is named after the plant valerian. Foods that are good sources of valine include cottage cheese, fish, poultry, peanuts, sesame seeds, and lentils. In sickle cell disease, the replacement of an A by T in the beta chain gene of hemoglobin changes the codon GAG (for glutamic acid) to GTG (which encodes valine). Thus valine, a hydrophic amnio acid, replaces glutamic acid, a hydrophilic amino acid, causing hemoglobin to not fold correctly. It is also a precursor in the penicillin biosynthetic pathway. Change Reason
The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
