Part Description
LP16783-0 Yersinia sp
Yersinia sp are Gram-negative oval or rod-shaped bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae. They are facultative anaerobes. While some species are motile below 37°C, all Yersinia species are nonmotile at 37°C and above. Most yersiniosis in humans in the United States is caused by Y. enterocolitica which most commonly manifests as fever, abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea in young children. In older children and adults it is sometimes confused with appendicitis as right-sided abdominal pain and fever are its primary symptoms. Contaminated food, especially raw or undercooked pork products, is the most frequent source of infection; unpasteurized milk and untreated water are also common sources. Only about one culture-confirmed Y. enterocolitica infection per 100,000 persons occurs annually in the U. S. Y. pestis was the pathogenic agent of the plague; rodents are its primary hosts and it is is transmitted to human through flea bites. Other Yersinia organisms have also been identified.
