Anti-sulfatide autoantibodies, also known as anti-GalS, have been associated with a variety of nervous system disorders, including IgM paraproteinaemia with associated demyelinating neuropathy, sensory impairment, and inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (IDPN). Studies have shown the presence of GalS on the external surface of the myelin sheath, which suggests that anti-GalS auto-antibodies can induce immune demyelination and may play a role in the pathogenesis of motor neuropathies such as Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), and in fact, over 60% of GBS patients have been found to have anti-GalS antibodies. Some data show that patients presenting with high titer of anti-GalS antibodies could benefit from early treatment with plasmapheresis and/or intravenous immunoglobulin. PMID: 10762412 ]
