Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) is a viral pathogen infecting both humans and birds (primarily chickens and turkeys). Four subtypes of aMPV have been identified - A, B, C and D. Avian metapneumovirus causes an acute respiratory infection and is highly contagious. The significance of the disease in chickens and turkeys is its impact on chicken and turkey flock populations as it can cause death when a secondary infection is present. In humans, it can be compared with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). When the infection occurs alone, it is less severe than RSV, but when combined with an RSV infection, the manifestation of disease worsens. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
