Acetylcholinesterase [Enzymatic activity/mass] in Red Blood Cells
Active
Term Description
Used in diagnosis of pesticide toxicity or succinylcholine toxicity. Also used to evaluate paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. Cholinesterase activity is completely and irreversibly inhibited by organophosphate containing pesticides.

Part Descriptions
LP15315-2 Acetylcholinesterase
An enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of ACETYLCHOLINE to CHOLINE and acetate. In the CNS, this enzyme plays a role in the function of peripheral neuromuscular junctions. EC 3.1.1.7.

LP15315-2 Acetylcholinesterase
Acetylcholinesterase, an enyzme (EC 3.1.1.7) (AChE) that controls synaptic and neurohumoral cholinergic activity by hydrolyzing the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, is also known as RBC cholinesterase, erythrocyte cholinesterase, or (most formally) acetylcholine acetylhydrolase. The ACHE gene is mapped to chromosome 7q22. AChE is found primarily in the blood on red blood cell membranes, in neuromuscular junctions, and in neural synapses. Two main clinical diagnostic uses are: 1) a second trimester screening test for fetal neural tube defects using amniotic fluid and, 2) in the general population, to detect past exposure to organophosphate insecticides with resultant inhibition of the enzyme using blood.
