Cervical mucus, a heterogenous secretion, contains approximately 90% water. Cervical mucus properties allow for: respective environment for sperm, protection of spermatozoa from hostile environment of the vagina and being phagocytized, supplemental energy requirements for sperm, differential selection of sperm based on motility and morphology, and initiation of sperm capacitation.

Spermatozoa's ability to penetrate cervical mucus in the female reproductive tract is critical to function and survivability. Ideal testing involves using the partner's cervical mucus rather than synthetic gels, such as bovine cervical mucus. Abnormal cervical mucus penetration findings can be an indication of infertility.
