Lymphocyte proliferation is used in the evaluation of patients with primary and secondary immunodeficiency diseases which affect T lymphocytes. Plant mitogens, including phytohemagglutinin [PHA] and pokeweed [PWM], are capable of inducing blastogenesis and stimulating lymphocyte proliferation. The panel is used to assess T cell function in patients having immunosuppressive therapy and to evaluate patients with cellular or humoral immunodeficiency diseases, which include SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency), CVID (Common Variable Immunodeficiency), and DiGeorge syndrome.
