Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid polypeptide hormone that is produced in humans by the C cells of the thyroid. It acts to decrease the formation and absorptive activity of osteoclasts. Its calcium regulating roles is greater in children and in certain diseases than in normal adults. Calcitonin testing detects medullary carcinoma of thyroid gland, and evaluates calcium metabolism.
