Micromegakaryocytes [Presence] in Blood by Light microscopy
Active
Part Description
LP66394-5 Micromegakaryocytes
Micromegakaryocytes are caused by dysmegakaryocytopoiesis, meaning the bone marrow is not making normal megakaryocytes. Micromegakaryocytes are typically seen in the peripheral blood in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) which are considered "pre-leukemia" syndromes.
The most obvious distinguishing characteristic of a micromegakaryocyte is the cytoplasm which is pale blue and may contain pink granules reminiscent of a mature platelet. Smudge-like nuclear chromatin also aids in the identification of a cell as a micromegakaryocyte.

- Change Reason
- Microscopy is a better way to describe this test than manual count; The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
