Citrullinated peptide (CCP) is a naturally occurring protein that is produced during the metabolism of ornithine to arginine. CCP proteins are found in synovial tissue of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). High levels of antibodies to CCP have a strong association with RA and are predictive of an aggressive and destructive disease outcome. During inflammation, citrulline is incorporated enzymatically into proteins[1], what is called citrullination. Recently, these ACPAs have turned up as powerful biomarkers, which are accepted as a major diagnostic tool in diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis (RA) already in a very early stage of disease.
