Broad casts are small mucoprotein tube-shaped structures that are much wider than ordinary casts and indicate localized tubule damage. As with any cast, broad casts are due to stasis in the distal collecting tubules, but broad casts are formed in the larger tubules. They vary, are heterogeneous, and sometimes are referred to as "renal failure casts". This is incorrect, however, because the kidney could recover or only part of the kidney could be involved.
