Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone synthesized and secreted by gonadotropes in the anterior pituitary gland. In the ovary FSH stimulates the growth of immature Graafian follicles to maturation. As the follicle grows it releases inhibin, which shuts off the FSH production. In men, FSH enhances the production of androgen-binding protein by the Sertoli cells of the testes and is critical for spermatogenesis. FSH and LH act synergistically in reproduction. Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) is a hormone secreted by the hypothalamus in order to stimulate the release of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and gonadotropins from the pituitary gland. GnRH release is crucial to the reproductive cycles of both males and females. In males, GnRH is instrumental in the production of sperm cells in the testes. In females, GnRH is necessary for conception and regulation of the menstrual cycle. To ensure the pituitary is coordinating properly with GnRH, an LH response to GnRH blood test is conducted. In this test, a shot of GnRH is administered to a patient and the LH level is observed over a specified period of time.
