Cefepime [Susceptibility] for meningitis by Disk diffusion (KB)
Active
Term Description
Susceptibility of an isolate to cefepime in the context of a patient with meningitis, i.e., the "meningitis breakpoint". Various agencies, including the FDA and CLSI in the U.S. and EUCAST in Europe, publish guidelines for determining susceptibility of different organisms to different antimicrobials. In most cases, susceptibility does not vary by type of infection, but for a few specific types of infection, including meningitis, pneumonia and urinary tract infection, certain antimicrobials have different susceptibility thresholds.
Part Descriptions
LP17165-9 Cefepime
Cefepime is a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic developed in 1994. It has an extended spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Cefepime hydrochloride was first introduced in 1994 and is currently marketed under various trade names including Maxipime (Elan Pharma, Maxcef, Cepimax, Cepimex, and Axepim).

Various agencies, including the FDA and CLSI in the U.S. and EUCAST in Europe, publish guidelines for determining susceptibility of different organisms to different antimicrobials. In most cases, susceptibility does not vary by infection site, but for a few specific types of infection, including meningitis, pneumonia and urinary tract infection, certain antimicrobials have different susceptibility thresholds, which are called "breakpoints". For terms in LOINC that represent specific breakpoints, the LOINC System will indicate the type of infection that the breakpoint is based on, for example, Isolate.meningitis, Isolate.pneumonia, and Isolate.UTI.
