Oxygen content in Arterial blood by calculation
Active
Term Description
This variable can be measured directly ( ref Br J Anaesth. 1970 Sep;42(9):803-4. but in clinical care it is mostly (or always) produced via a calculation via the formula: Oxygen content+ Sa02 x 1.34 x Hb + .003 x PO2 and measured in mL/dL. When compared, the direct measurement and the estimate from the formula are usually described as equivalent.

Part Description
LP30884-8 Oxygen content
Oxygen content is a component of a blood gas analysis test that helps to evaluate acid-base balance, gas exchange, and voluntary respiratory control. In the blood gas analysis test, blood is drawn from an artery and analyzed in the lab for pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide, partial pressure of oxygen, bicarbonate content per 100 mL of blood, oxygen saturation, and oxygen content. Oxygen content is the sum of the oxygen that is combined with hemoglobin and the oxygen dissolved in the plasma. The calculation for oxygen content is the following: arterial oxygen content = (Hgb x 1.36)(Oxygen saturation/100)+(partial pressure of oxygen x 0.0031).
