Glutathione (GSH) is an important low molecular weight thiol compound that is synthesized in cells. Its primary functions are protecting cells against oxidative stress and regulating cell function. Glutathione peroxidase oxidizes GSH to glutathione disulfide (GSSG) with concomitant formation of H20 from H2O2. Most cells have a high GSH/GSSG ratio. PMID: 18796312 Cellular GSH concentration is typically a thousand-fold higher than the intravascular concentration. Low intravascular levels of GSH are associated with chronic diseases including heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, and mitochondrial disorders, and low intracellular levels with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Higher than normal GSH levels have been found in a variety of cancerous cells, including bone marrow, breast, colon and lung, which makes the cells more resistant to chemotherapy and radiation.
