Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (4-hydroxybutanoic acid) is both a drug and a naturally occurring substance found in the body. As a drug, it is approved for treatment of a rare form of narcolepsy, but is also being manufactured illegally. GHB is considered a "date rape" drug because it can be mixed with a liquid and given to unsuspecting victims. Peak plasma levels are attained approximately 30 minutes following administration.
