The teratozoospermia index (TZI) is a measure in the number of abnormalities per ABNORMAL spermatozoon. For the calculation of TZI, a maximum of four defects per abnormal spermatozoon is counted, one for each of the following areas: head, midpiece, principal piece and excess residual cytoplasm. The morphological criteria enumerated in the WHO manual can be used (WHO laboratory manual for the Examination and processing of human semen). Laboratory cell counters or a score sheet can be used.
