The result (score) for this test is based on the quantity of Atopobium vaginae (AV) in vaginal fluid by nucleic acid amplification compared to known calibrator values. The score is used to determine the presence of bacterial vaginosis (see LOINC 69564-3).

Atopobium vaginae is a species of Actinobacteria within the genus Atopobium. A. vaginae are anaerobic, Gram-positive bacteria associated with a wide variety of infections, including bacterial vaginosis.
