The invasion plasmid antigen H (ipaH) gene is a multicopy gene exclusively found in all Shigella and enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC). Shigella and EIEC both evolved from nonpathogenic Escherichia coli, and sequencing of multiple housekeeping genes indicates that EIEC is genetically related to Shigella. Shigella causes bacillary dysentery with symptoms including abdominal cramps, nausea, fever and a bloody and mucus diarrhea. By testing for the absence of lysine decarboxylase (LDC) activity and presence of the IpaH gene, Shigella and EIEC can be differentiated from non-enteroinvasive E. coli.
