Oximetry was formerly used as a short hand for pulse oximetry. The more precise name is pulse oximetry, which measures the oxygen saturation and other parameters at the point where arterial blood surges into the capillaries. Per the experts, the system for pulse oximetry measurements is really arterial blood, not capillary. The oxygen saturation of capillary blood could, in theory, be measured by collecting capillary blood in a capillary tube and running to the laboratory, but what is usually done is to place a pulse oximetry sensor on the finger or other part of the body.

Because of the confusion that occurs in countries that report results as both decimal fraction and percent, this property was created to represent decimal fractions that are reported without units.

Oxygen saturation (sO2) is defined as the ratio of oxyhemoglobin to "active" hemoglobin (oxyhemoglobin + deoxyhemoglobin). Some say the term oxygen saturation has been erroneously redefined with a denominator of "total" instead of "active" hemoglobin, an ambiguity that can sometimes create confusion when viewing reported values from different instruments (Anesth Analg. 2007 Dec;105(6 Suppl):S5-9.)
