Part Descriptions
LP157181-1 Pathologic casts
Urinary casts are cylindrical aggregations of particles that form in the distal nephron of the kidney and can be seen in urine samples examined by light microscopy. Many types of casts exist, including red blood cell, white blood cell, and fatty casts. Mixed cellular casts are casts that contain multiple types of cells. Different types of casts are associated with different diseases, for example, white blood cell casts are indicators of kidney infection, and fatty casts can be seen in patients with nephrotic syndrome.[MedlinePlus Encyclopedia: 003586]
