IgG antibodies to HLA Class I (HLA-A-B-C) antigens are detected in patient's serum or plasma by EIA methods. Results are based on a threshold; significantly greater (e.g. 2X) absorbency compared to the negative control is considered positive. This code is based on, but not exclusive to, the submitter's test kit, Lifecodes QuikScreen.

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I (A, B, and C) and II (DP, DM, DOA, DOB, DQ, and DR) in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system contains a large number of genes involved in immune system function in humans. The proteins encoded by some genes form antigens. HLA class I and II antigens are widely distributed on all nucleated cells and carried by platelets.

Antibodies specific to HLA class I and II antigens can be acquired through alloimmunization due to pregnancy, transfusion of blood products, or previous transplants. Alloimmunization can lead to production of antibodies in approximately one third of individuals. The presence of antibodies, specifically IgG, can affect the survival of transplant allografts or transfused platelets in sensitized individuals. The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; The EIA method, which was always intended to cover more than just enzyme-linked immunoassay and whose display name for the long common name has always been Immunoassay, was renamed IA in order to eliminate ambiguity about whether the method has a broader meaning than just enzyme-linked immunoassay. Likewise, EIA.rapid was renamed IA.rapid. These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
