Part Descriptions
LP14855-8 Virus
A virus is an infectious agent that invades cells and hijacks the enzymes and materials of the host cells in order to replicate. Viruses are smaller than bacteria and are comprised of RNA or DNA within a protein coat called a capsid. Since they cannot survive or multiply outside a living cell, they are not considered alive. Viruses cause many different diseases in animals and plants including influenza, AIDS, measles, chicken pox, Zika and other illnesses. Some viruses can cause chronic infections, such as hepatitis B. LP6209-3 Culture
A culture is a laboratory procedure where a sample of tissue or fluid from a patient is placed in or on growth media (agar, broth) to induce the proliferation of potentially infectious agents (bacteria, fungi, viruses). The presence of growth is documented and the organisms are identified to determine whether or not a pathogen is present.
Once a pathogen is identified, specific testing techniques can be used to determine drug susceptibilities for assistance in treatment. [https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-microbiology/chapter/culturing-bacteria/]
