Staphylococcus aureus and/or coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) commonly isolated from human blood cultures can be detected by qualitative, multicolor nucleic acid hybridization assays. This code is based on, but not limited in use to, the submitted test, AdvanDx's Staphylococcus QuickFISH assay, which is intended for use on cultured blood.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are Staphylococci that are unable to produce coagulase, an enzyme that causes blood clot formation. CoNS species include S. epidermidis, S. saprophyticus, S. haemolyticus, S. lugdunensis, S. schleiferi, and S. caprae. S. epidermidis is a commensal of the skin, but can cause severe infections in immune-suppressed patients and those with central venous catheters. S. saprophyticus, another coagulase-negative species that is part of the normal vaginal flora, is predominantly found in genitourinary tract infections in sexually-active young women. In recent years, several other Staphylococcus species have been implicated in human infections, notably S. lugdunensis, S. schleiferi, and S. caprae. FISH uses fluorescent probes that bind to only those parts of the chromosome with which they show a high degree of sequence similarity.
