Term Description

A bacterial biotype (biovar) identified in an isolate by an applicable method may be reported using this code. Biotypes for bacteria of any kind may be identified. The answer list provided with this code are just a few examples.

Part Descriptions

LP14082-9   Bacteria
One of the three domains of life (the others being Eukarya and Archaea), also called Eubacteria. They are unicellular prokaryotic microorganisms which generally possess rigid cell walls and multiply by cell division. They exhibit three principal forms: round or coccal, rodlike or bacillary, and spiral or spirochetal. Bacteria can be classified by their response to oxygen (aerobic, anaerobic, or facultatively anaerobic) and by how they obtain their energy (chemotrophic, i.e. via a chemical reaction or phototrophic, via a light reaction). In addition, chemotrophs obtain their energy from chemicals, lithotrophic from inorganic compounds and organotrophic from organic compounds. Bacteria are also classified by the source carbon that they utilize: heterotrophic, from organic sources or autotrophic, from carbon dioxide. They can also be classified by whether or not they stain (based on the structure of their cell walls) with crystal violet dye: gram-negative or gram-positive. LP172705-8   Bacteria biotype
Bacteria biotypes (biovars) are strains that are differentiated by biochemical or other non-serological means, usually by numbers and letters. In contrast, a serotype (serovar) is a strain differentiated by serological means. Source: Association of Public Health Laboratories
