Measurement of cholesterol esterase (lysosomal acid lipase, LAL) activity in dried blood spots (DBS) is performed to diagnose cholesterol ester storage disease (CESD) and Wolman Disease (WD).

Cholesterol esterase (lysosomal acid lipase, LAL) is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of cholesterol and other sterol esters, to release cholesterol plus a fatty acid anion. Cholesterol esterase activity is used to diagnose lysosomal storage disorders, Wolman Disease and Cholesteryl Ester Storage Disease (CESD), which are due to a deficiency of this enzyme.
