Candida sp rRNA [Identifier] by FISH in Positive blood culture
Active
Term Description
Candida species, including C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata and/or Candida krusei, commonly isolated from human blood cultures can be detected by qualitative, multicolor nucleic acid hybridization assays. This code is based on, but not limited in use to, a submission for AdvanDx's Yeast Traffic Light PNA FISH assay. The test is done on blood cultures that have positive growth of an organism, not directly from a blood sample.
Part Descriptions
LP14808-7 Candida sp
Systemic candidiasis is an invasive yeast infection caused primarily by C. albicans, although other Candida species can also be the cause. It leads to septicemia, endocarditis, meningitis, and rarely as osteomyelitis. Superficial candidiasis is common, but generally only immunocompromised patients have systemic candidiasis. Because Candida species are common contaminants, diagnosis is difficult and requires the elimination of other possible causes.

LP62864-1 FISH
FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) is a cytogenetic technique used to detect and localize the presence or absence of specific DNA sequences on chromosomes. FISH uses fluorescent probes that bind to only those parts of the chromosome with which they show a high degree of sequence similarity. Fluorescence microscopy can be used to find out where the fluorescent probe bound to the chromosomes. FISH is often used for finding specific features in DNA for use in genetic counseling, medicine, and species identification. FISH can also be used to detect and localize specific mRNAs within tissue samples. In this context, it can help define the spatial-temporal patterns of gene expression within cells and tissues.
