Candida species, including C. albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, C. glabrata and/or Candida krusei, commonly isolated from human blood cultures can be detected by qualitative, multicolor nucleic acid hybridization assays. This code is based on, but not limited in use to, a submission for AdvanDx's Yeast Traffic Light PNA FISH assay. The test is done on blood cultures that have positive growth of an organism, not directly from a blood sample.

Systemic candidiasis is an invasive yeast infection caused primarily by C. albicans, although other Candida species can also be the cause. It leads to septicemia, endocarditis, meningitis, and rarely as osteomyelitis. Superficial candidiasis is common, but generally only immunocompromised patients have systemic candidiasis.
