Surfactant, pulmonary-associated protein D, also known as SFTPD or SP-D, is a protein encoded by the SFTPD gene. It is a member of the calcium-dependent lectins (collectins) and synthesized by type II epithelial cells and Clara cells in the lung. SP-D has a function in immunity, host defense and surfactant metabolism. SP-D values may be supportive in patients with interstial lung diseases and is considered to be supportive in patients with ARDS and CF. SFTPD levels may be ordered with CC16 (Clara-cell secretory protein), an anti-inflammatory marker with respect to the integrity of the lung epithelium. It may also be ordered with macrophage-derived YKL-40 (Chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1)), which provides information about the condition of the interstitium of the lung. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
