Part Descriptions
LP157337-9 Bacterial vancomycin resistance vanB gene
This test is used for the detection of vancomycin resistance genes by multiplex PCR. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat various infections, primarily those caused by gram-positive bacteria. Vancomycin resistance genes were first found in enterococci, and more recently have been found in Staphylococcus aureus. The emergence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) in hospitalized patients has lead to a restricted use of vancomycin. To date, multiple vancomycin resistance genes have been characterized, including: vanA, vanB, vanC (vanC-1, vanC-2, vanC-3), and VanD. Of the six van types, vanA and vanB are the most resistant to vancomycin, and are the two types that cause VRSA. PMID: 24983424

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; Removed parentheses from Component because the contents represent a gene name, not an acronym.
