75265-9Blood group antibody screen [Presence] in Serum or Plasma by Polyethylene glycol (PEG) methodActive

Term Description

Antibody screening is used to demonstrate unexpected antibodies (other than ABO) and is performed on both donors and recipients to help ensure compatibility between recipient antibodies and donor red cells. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a blood bank agent that reduces antibody screening incubation time by excluding water and therefore allowing red cells to come closer together during centrifugation. PEG may enhance the expression of warm antibodies and auto-antibodies. A downside to PEG is that use may lead to false positive reactions at 37C from nonspecific agglutination. An advantage of PEG use is that it may provide greater sensitivity than LISS or albumin.

Part Descriptions

LP67167-4   Blood group antibody screen
Detects atypical IgG antibodies prior to transfusion or during pregnancy. The screening test is designed specifically to detect IgG antibodies and some IgM antibodies (non ABO) may also be detected. Antibodies detected by the antibody screen should then be identified, and a titer performed if the antibody identified is considered to be clinically significant during pregnancy. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a blood bank agent that reduces antibody screening incubation time by excluding water and therefore packing red cells closer together during centrifugation. PEG may enhance the expression of warm antibodies and auto-antibodies. A downside to PEG is that use may lead to false positive reactions at 37C from nonspecific agglutination. An advantage of PEG use is that it may provide greater sensitivity than LISS or albumin. Source: Regenstrief LOINC

Change Reason
The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.

Both
