- The "Probe.mag capture" Method has been deprecated and replaced with the more general "Probe" Method since the "mag capture" portion represents how the nucleic acids are isolated, which is not a distinction made in the LOINC Method for molecular tests. Given that updating the Method would change the meaning of the term, a new term was created to replace the existing term as recommended by the Special Topics workgroup on PCR-based Methods and approved by the LOINC Lab Committee at the June 2017 meeting.

88244-9 | Acinetobacter sp rpsA gene [Presence] by Probe in Positive blood culture |
Term Description
Magnetic beads and fluorescent probes are used to capture and detect targeted nucleic acid sequences specific to Acinetobacter species within the rpsA gene in positive blood culture. The rpsA gene encodes the "30S ribosomal protein S1".

Part Descriptions
LP183540-6 Probe.mag capture
Nucleic acid is first concentrated and purified using a bead-based method, followed by a oligonucleotide probe detection of sequence of interest with signal enhancement.

Acinetobacter is a group of gram negative bacteria found in soil and water and a common source of infection in patients, primarily in intensive care units and healthcare settings with very ill patients. Among the Acinetobacter species, Acinetobacter baumannii accounts for about 80% of reported infections. Symptoms range from pneumonia to serious blood or wound infections. Acinetobacter-related infections rarely occur outside of healthcare settings. Acinetobacter species are resistant to many classes of antibiotics, so treatment is determined on a case-by-case basis.

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
