Term Description
Men who are at high risk for sexually transmitted diseases for HPV-related anal cancer may be tested similar to a cervical Pap smear where the anal lining is swabbed and cells examined microscopically. HPV DNA tests can also be performed on these samples and similarly, positive results need to be followed up with further testing, including a more thorough exam and possible biopsy. There are more than 118 different types of HPV, and approximately 40 different HPVs that can infect the human anogenital mucosa. However, only a subset of approximately 14 of these is considered high-risk for the development of cervical cancer and its precursor lesions. This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the cobas HPV test kit which uses PCR and nucleic acid hybridization for the detection of 14 high-risk types.

Part Description
LP149287-7 Human papilloma virus 31+33+35+39+45+51+52+56+58+59+66+68 DNA
Oncogenic (high risk) human papillomavirus types behave as carcinogens in the development of cervicalcancer and other anogenital cancers. High risk types (which include types16,18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 68, 69, 73, 82) can cause low-grade cervical cell abnormalities, high-grade cervical cell abnormalities that are predecessors to cancer, and anogenital cancers. High-risk HPV types are identified in 99% of cervical cancers.
