Measurement of calcitonin levels in fine-needle aspiration specimens from athyrotic individuals treated for medullary thyroid carcinoma. Test is performed to confirm or exclude metastases in enlarged or ultrasonographically suspicious lymph nodes.

Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid polypeptide hormone that is produced in humans by the C cells of the thyroid. It acts to decrease the formation and absorptive activity of osteoclasts. Its calcium regulating roles is greater in children and in certain diseases than in normal adults. Calcitonin testing detects medullary carcinoma of thyroid gland, and evaluates calcium metabolism. Concentrations of calcitonin in plasma rise in patients with C cell tumors, and in some patieints with cancer of lung, breast and pancreas. It also rises in chronic renal failure, pernicious anemia, pregnancy at term and is higher in newborns. Source: Regenstrief Institute
