Part Description
LP183519-0 Erythrocyte chromasia
Erythrocyte chromasia (chromia) refers to the color and pattern of color in a red blood cell. A normochromic erythrocyte shows the expected red-orange cytoplasm due to hemoglobin and a small circle of central pallor due to the concave cell shape. Hypochromia (or hypochromasia) is a result of decreased hemoglobin, and appears as increasing size in the zone of central pallor, often graded as 0, 1+, 2+, 3+, 4+. Polychromasia occurs because of presence of young erythrocytes (often a response to anemia). Under wright stain, polychromatic erythrocytes are diffusely blue due to residual RNA, and often slightly larger than normal erythrocytes. Another term, hyperchromia, could be applied to RBC's with decreased central pallor, but these cells are usually reported in morphological terms (as spherocytes).
