Commonly used to detect Pneumocystis jirovecii (previously classified as Pneumocystis carinii) and fungal organisms as causes of infectious pulmonic disease in immunosuppressed patients such as individuals with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Grocott-Gomori's (or Gömöri) methenamine silver stain (GMS) is a popular staining method in histology as a screen for fungal organisms and can be used to identify the yeast-like fungus Pneumocystis jiroveci which causes a form of pneumonia called Pneumocystis Pneumonia (PCP) or Pneumocystosis.
